On a sweltering summer day near Reading Pennsylvania, the mundane lives of four Payless ShoeSource employees are forever altered and enriched when an unlikely accident occurs. Throughout, Drive-Thru Shoes is an examination of the smaller simpler moments of everyday minimum-wage life, where frustrations and disappointments of love and work are commonplace, but it is also a vivid picture of how the unexpected is ultimately the true boss of us all. Bittersweet in its honesty, entertaining in its peculiarity, this novella charms with both tension and action, pessimism and hope.
Steven Brandsdorfer wears a size eleven shoe last he checked. He lives in Philadelphia where he no longer labors in retail. Drive-Thru Shoes is his second work of fiction. His debut novel The Never Fable was released in 2012.

Steven Brandsdorfer never fails to entertain. I laughed out loud and bookmarked several pages to which I must return. As per usual I have highlighted a few of my favorite quotes:
"Sideways and subtle in most everything he did."
"98 hot as people."
"-yellow afternoon passing into blue night, something calm without drudgery, this and that."
"I love you. Don't go," said no one."
And finally~ "Shit-shat"
As always I wait with bated breath for Steven's next work of fiction. He is truly a literary gem.

DriveThru Shoes edition by Steven Brandsdorfer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a quick, fun read. I got pretty attached to the characters and would be very happy for a sequel! Sets a clear mood and feel of hot summer days in Philly suburbs. Good pace, good characters, fun look into world of budget shoe retail!
Although I'm lucky enough not to work retail currently, I HAVE in the past! I love how this story is so realistic and all 5 characters are easy to relate to. Drive-Thru Shoes illustrates the daily drag of working in retail and all of the personal aspects of it.
At points I would actually laugh out loud at some of the quotes in Drive-Thru Shoes, my favorite "shit-shat"! My husband looked at me like I was crazy while I was reading and laughing at the story! This book is a page-turner!
An excellent character study; each of the five characters are presented so thoroughly they seemed real, and Steven Brandsdorfer treats us to some wonderful descriptions, eg 'Ray, because of his perfect posture and hesitancy to swing his arms, had a way of gliding as he moved, an embarrassed sort of floating'
However, there was nothing to hang it all together. No plot and very little action. The characters are at work in a discount shoe shop just before it's due to be renovated. That's it. Nothing actually happens until half way through, and then it's 'out of the blue', and over just as quickly. I did finish the book, mainly to see if anything would happen, but I was relieved it was only a novella. This was not to my taste as a story, yet I am still extremely impressed with the characterisation and writing, and very glad I read it. It is always good to try something new, whether as a reader or a writer, and I'm torn on this one. What do you think?
I wouldn't exactly call this high literature, but it certainly serves the purpose that it intends. I laughed once every few pages, particularly at the spot on dialect, slang, and attitudes of the employees at a shoe store. It was a story about real people, like a peek into the lives of retail workers that we often see and overlook. The story is also somewhat charming, despite being rough around the edges, and part of that realistic element is what makes the entire book so attractive and fun to read.
Somehow, we end up rooting for certain characters, despite knowing that they are far from perfect, because we see something of ourselves in these lovable losers. Brandsdorfer also makes us care about the characters as this surprisingly unpredictable novella moves forward. It is perfect for a short read when you need a few good laughs, or feel like finding some nostalgia in your memories of retail days gone by.
Finally, in terms of actual academic value, the author truly mastered urban dialect and the modern slang/phonetic writing of today's popular, lazy speech. As you're reading the words and picturing the characters, the speech matches up with the descriptions that Brandsdorfer gives, genuinely sucking a reader into the story and making it such a compellingly easy and fun thing to read. Well done.
Short novellas are always fun to read, because whether or not they are captivating or brilliantly written, you can knock them out in a day or two, and there is almost always something good to take away from the experience. "Drive-Thru Shoes" is no different. Brandsdorfer tackled subject matter that is typically ignored by the literary world, perhaps because, as it is when you actually work there, retail can be boring. The banality of a shoe store is only saved by the author's ability to populate it with a rag-tag group of characters that seem torn from real life. The gum-snapping foul-mouthed renegade and the comfortably lazy and disinterested Ray aren't stock characters; they are stock people.
Readers, especially those that have ever braved the world of retail employment, can relate to the numbing pain of selling shoes, shirts, televisions, and everything in between, and the camaraderie that the author almost instantly builds with the reader is important, and shows an impressive talent of writing. However, for all of his ability to paint a picture and make us understand the setting as though we had just walked out of it earlier in the day, there needs to be some sort of story arc that rewards the readers for making it through. There needs to be a payoff, and while there were occasional rises in the action, as though the plot was truly thickening, it was soon replaced with more unnecessary exposition or unconnected story lines and tangents. I think it could have been a great book had there been more of a point, per se.
That being said, I did get some good laughs out of the novella, and the author's ability to make the characters come alive means that he has a grasp on writing, if not on plot development. I am excited to see more by this author, and I hope he keeps the good things about his work, and focuses more on some of his weaker points. All in all, an entertaining, light read, especially for someone who understands the horrors of retail and has been waiting for someone to put it into words!
I read Drive-Thru Shoes in one sitting and throughly enjoyed the book. It's full of funny and interesting characters that keep your attention. I felt like Brandsdorfer incorporated people I have encountered working and shopping retail. He does a great job showing the drudgery of it all.
