Updated from the 1986 edition, this is the definitive outside look at the transformation of a miniscule group with no resources, into the most successful Trotskyist tendency in Britain since the founding of Trotsky’s Left Opposition. At its height in the late 1980s, Militant became a household name and had more than 8,000 supporters, national and regional headquarters, as well as 200 full-time workers – even more than the Labour Party. In the late 80's the tendency organized the Poll Tax campaign that ended Margaret Thatcher's career.

In this book, Crick describes the tendency as Britain's fifth largest political party. This is not far from the truth.

While the book is the premier investigative journalist handling of the organization, it isn't particularly friendly with the tendency, painting in broad, cynical and often overly-simplistic strokes.

Additionally, the book does not focus on Militant's demise, arguably resulting from a deviation in the group's strategy in the first forty years. Ted Grant (the tendency's founder), Alan Woods, Rob Sewell and a minority of Militant's leadership was expelled in 1992. A full insider's account of the latter years can be found in Rob Sewell's article "How The Militant Was Built - and How It Was Destroyed." ([...]).

Fortunately, the new edition's afterward takes up the general trends and even delves into the exploits of many Militant members post split.

That said, only by reading Alan Woods' Ted Grant - The Permanent Revolutionary, Frost and North's Militant Liverpool: A City on the Edge and Peter Taaffe's Rise Of Militant, will one obtain a full rounded understanding of the Tendency's meteoric rise and fall, but Crick's expose provides significant insight. With the rise of Corbyn and the left within the Labour Party, the history of Militant is a must-read for those who wish to understand the history of the party.

Today, Alan Woods and the Socialist Appeal continue with Militant's traditions - providing more insight at socialist.net
