Her name is Ami Sato. She is an incredibly beautiful and highly intelligent medical student. She thinks she can cheat in an examination and get away with it.
His name is Simon Drake. He is a young assistant professor of numismatics in a Canadian university. After he meets Ami, he is handed a series of riddles that lead him to the ancient cities of Argolis. He thinks he is playing the hunter in a romantic version of hide and seek for two.
Unfortunately, things are not what they seem. When five ancient coins mysteriously disappear, a number of other people come to play as well. People like an expert forger, a private secretary, a Russian oligarch and counter-intelligence agents. The setting quickly shifts from the Acropolis and a luxurious yacht to an open grave and the dark waters of the Aegean. The new players change the rules and Simon Drake, who only wanted Ami in his arms, is in turn followed, eavesdropped, arrested, interrogated, extorted and abducted.
The game now being played is called the survival of the fittest. The only part available to Drake is that of the bait. The new players use all means and observe no rules. They think they are the hunters. But above them flies the master of the hunt - an aggressive bird of prey with bloody claws and a carnivorous beak.

Count on a dysfunctional mother-daughter relationship to suck innocent victims into its vortex. Add an intriguing loss of five valuable ancient coins and the shady characters of the international antiquities trade, against a well-researched backdrop of the Greek archaeological world, and you have the makings of a fun read. Nothing too heavy.
A good thriller has no parallel in-terms of reading enjoyment and the author gets it right from the beginning the setup is solid, the characters are intriguing and plot gets more & more interesting. You're going to finish this book in a few hours, simply because you cannot leave it off your hands. If you enjoy the likes of Eric Ambler or John Le Carre, you're going to really enjoy this one!
Interesting read, especially if you know Athens and enjoy archaeology.
Full disclosure I got to read this novel even before it was published. It soon had me googling odd words like tetradrachm, wondering about Russian oligarchs and Swiss collectors--and even pulling out a magnifying glass to examine the owl's feathers on a Greek one-euro coin.
Simon Drake is an intriguing hero--part academic geek, part Lothario. I admired his erudition, smiled at his erotic adventures and held my breath as he encountered perils--to include an open coffin and a watery grave.
But while we are learning fascinating tidbits about ancient artifacts and modern scholars, coin collectors, counterfeiters and thieves, Simon is gaining his own unexpected education in the ways of women and the workings of his own psyche. He is an apt pupil--and by the end of the novel, quite a wise owl. I'm glad to have met him!
Readable and unputdownable but somehow leaves the reader with a feeling that he has just read something superficial.
Great entertainment, an interesting read. By far one of the better mysteries and adventures that is offered.
A great summer adventure and good story to wrap yourself up in.
The characters are interesting, the plot draws you in, and you find yourself transported to another place as the story develops.
Something for everyone in this book. One of the best ones out there!
In the current environment of cultural property debate on the pillage/repatriation and import/export of antiquities, this is an exciting and timely addition to crime fiction adventure. A very possible scenario of art deception in modern Athens involving a most engaging and sometimes amusing mix of -fictional- characters. Literate and fast paced, I was involved from beginning to end. A learned delight!
